Code violation: prize money for information

Notices issued to political parties, says Collector

Show-cause notices were served on eight officers for dereliction of duty

Dwivedi to hold meeting with Police and Excise officials




The district administration has announced a prize money of Rs. 1,00,000 comprising individual cash prizes ranging from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 50,000, to those providing information on violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in the run-up to general elections. People can put any violation in the notice of the MCC district coordinator or the supervisory officers of Parliamentary and Assembly constituency. The prizes are intended to enlist the people’s cooperation for the fair conduct of elections.

Addressing a media conference here on Sunday, Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi said that information on MCC violations could also be furnished to the Election Commission through toll free phone number 1100 and appropriate penal action would be taken under the Representation of People’s Act and related legislations.

As regards the action so far taken violators of MCC in the district, Mr. Dwivedi said 33,631 publicity materials like banners, hoarding and wall writings were removed and notices were issued to the political parties concerned to pay a penalty of Rs. 10,29,787. But, no party has paid its share of the penal amount leading to the invocation of Revenue Recovery Act in a day or two. Show-cause notices were served on eight officers for dereliction of duty and they faced the least punishment of suspension. A total of 84 complaints were received as of now.

Mr. Dwivedi said he called for a meeting of the Police and Excise Departments on March 16 for discussing ways to mitigate the distribution of liquor. The administrators of Yanam which is a part of Union Territory of Puducherry, were also being roped in to prevent the using of that place by political parties for manufacturing and sale of all forms of liquor. Vehicles seized would not be released until after the elections.

Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy said 3,666 anti-social elements were detained till now and 537 out of 641 licensed weapons in the district were deposited with the police. The remaining weapons were either with security personnel of banks or Army soldiers. Arrack worth Rs. 41,000 and IMFL (Indian made foreign liquor) amounting to Rs. 14,560 were seized from different places in Kakinada, Rajahmundry and Rampachodavaram.

District Revenue Officer M. Mohan Raju, Deputy Commissioner of Excise D. Janardhan Rao and MCC district coordinator V. Mahipal were present.
